The Project Scope
An older Ikea style kitchen was currently installed with old in-efficient appliances and a poorly designed layout. The aim was to replace with modern appliances using mid to high end cupboards. The client wanted a traditional Shaker style kitchen with a modern twist. The layout was to be changed to remove the sloping Island which housed the sink and replace with a Peninsular / Breakfast bar now housing an Induction hob with a built in down draft extractor.
The Before Shots
Challenges we Faced
We quickly found that there would be lots more plastering needed than first thought. Sadly this was down to loose plaster behind the tiles when removing them. We then needed to blend this new plaster (the client wanted fresh flat walls with no tiles just an up-stand) with the rest of the wall. We also found that under the old island, hot and cold water pipes had been run around the perimeter of the room and then under the concrete floor to the island. Rather than digging the floor up, we safely turned off and drained the water and then cut and securely capped the pipes both ends.
The During Shots
The End Product
After overcoming the few hurdles faced, we carefully installed the solid oak worktops routing (very carefully) draining board grooves for the double Belfast sink (despite almost getting a hernia lifting it into place!) and the large cut out for the hob. The worktops and up-stands then got sanded down from 180 grit to 120 ready for the three coats of Osmo food safe clear worktop oil, each taking 8 hours to dry and a light sand in between.
The final end product has resulted in a stunning kitchen that the owners love and will last the test of time. The kitchen is a Howdens kitchen by the way! The whole kitchen install (ripping out, plastering, plumbing etc and decoration) through to completion took a full week.
